In morning 14 October, 2014, in Da Lat city of Lam Dong province, Viet Nam Administration of Forestry in collaboration with the Secretariat of the ASEAN – ROK Agreement on Forestry (AFoCo) and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Lam Dong province held thematic workshop on payments for ecosystem services (PES) within ASEAN-Korea framework.
The workshop aimed to contribute to raising awareness on PES for AFoCo countries; share experience and successful modalities on PES among AFoCo countries; and discuss potentials of cooperation programs on PFES within AFoCo framework.
Attending the workshop were representatives from ASEAN countries and South Korea, AFoCo Secretariat, the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), and a number of other international organizations. On the Viet Nam side, there were leadership of the Administration of Forestry (VNFOREST), provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, provincial Forest Protection Department, and provincial Forest Protection and Development Fund.
Delivering opening remarks, Dr. Nguyen Ba Ngai, Deputy Director General of VNFOREST highlighted that Viet Nam is the first country in Asia to promulgate and implement PFES scheme at a national level. The objectives of PFES include: protecting existing forest area; improving forest quality; increasing the contribution of the forestry sector to the national economy; reducing pressure on the State budget for forest protection and development; and ensuring social security of forest-dependent people.
Representatives of AFoCo Secretariat and AFoCo countries highly appreciated the support of VNFOREST and Lam Dong’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to organize this workshop. This is an opportunity for Viet Nam to share the experience on PES implementation with regional countries. Moreover, this has given the commitment of Viet Nam in the implementation of AFoCo framework and mobilization of international resources for forest protection and development. /.”
